<![CDATA[Khagook the shaman looked up and saw the eye. He did not flinch or scream; he just quickly searched through his bag of herbs, checking whether he had accidentally taken the good stuff again, but it was all there, which left Khagook confused.

The eye seemed to look down on him from somewhere beyond the stars, which in itself was curious, as Khagook was currently sitting in a cave, hiding from the rain. Looking at it for too long made him feel dizzy.

It blinked once, then continued watching.

Khagook waited for a while for something to happen, until his belly started to rumble, then chewed on the numbing root from his stash until he fell asleep.

When Khagook awoke, the eye was still there, which he found both reassuring and creepy.

Nothing in the memory of the shamans told of an eye-in-the-sky, as far as Khagook could remember. Then again, the experience seemed very personal. Most of his father's experiences had been with the naked goddess, while his grandfather had spent his days dreading the visits of the horned hunters, and the very short tenure of his great-grandfather had lots of fire-demons in it.

Khagook shrugged (incidentally the first time a human ever shrugged in the face of cosmic absurdity), accepted the eye as his personal shamanic experience, and went about his life.

#writing #microfiction #smallstories]]>
